Did you know? At the beginning of the 20th century, this gem was owned by the Countess of Sormiou, a visionary woman enchanted by the wild beauty of the place. Through a marriage in the 1920s, the countess became the guardian of this cove and fell instantly in love with it. After her death, her descendants continued this family tradition by building traditional cabins for family getaways, far from the urban bustle of downtown Marseille.
A Timeless Escape
As a true Marseillaise, Sormiou Cove has been dear to my heart since childhood. Every weekend spent here has enriched my journey with invaluable discoveries and memories. Yet every time I set foot here again, the awe remains intact in the face of the splendor and tranquility of this place.
From the moment you arrive at Sormiou, an immediate sense of escape overwhelms you. The rocky path winding between the pines and cliffs, which I took from Baumettes, offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and limestone formations.
Once I reached my hosts’ refuge, the panoramic view of the bay, illuminated by turquoise waters under the sun, warmly welcomed me. The 128 scattered cabins exude a convivial and authentic atmosphere, blending harmoniously with the environment. Passed down from generation to generation, each cabin tells a unique story and embodies a precious family legacy.
Reconnecting with Simple Pleasures
During this stay, I indulged in simple pleasures. The days were filled with swims in crystal-clear waters, walks along winding paths, and relaxing moments on the sandy beach. Sormiou Cove is a paradise for scuba diving enthusiasts, as the seabed is home to an astonishing biodiversity, populated by colorful fish and dazzling corals.
In the evening, the place takes on its magical aura. Under the starry sky, we gathered around a barbecue, never without a good local wine. Our lively conversations mingled with the sounds of the waves and the songs of the cicadas, creating a convivial and timeless atmosphere. At Sormiou, electricity is scarce and internet connection is almost nonexistent, offering us pure and authentic moments, shielded from modern distractions.
A Protected Sanctuary
The magic of Sormiou also lies in its careful preservation. As part of the Calanques National Park, this place benefits from rigorous monitoring to protect its fragile ecosystem. Car traffic is limited during the day to reduce human impact, and only cabin owners and a few privileged individuals can access it by vehicle during the day. In the evening from 7 PM, car access is open to all, allowing everyone to contemplate this enchanting nature under the golden light of the twilight.
